sHailing from Seattle, WA,The Briefs resemble nothing for which the city is noted; instead they're an amped up nervous fun box, threatening to explode with nervous energy. The band's success at taking their alienated outsider status (listen to their prev- iously released song "Poor and Weird") and making it an asset has spearheaded a new sound in their hometown. They've been pogoing noisily on the heads of early punk giants ever since! "There was so much great music around in the late '70s. It was fun and imaginative and had aggression," says guitarist Steve E. Nix of the nods to the aforementioned eras and scenes. They've managed to retain a defiantly original sound. It is impossible to see them live and leave unconvinced of their utter genius in synth- esizing influences into a fresh, cohesive whole.
The Seattle quartet has been exhausting audiences with their manic energy since the start of the millennium. This is one band that is not afraid to hit the road and take their sound to the people. The Briefs have built a loyal following by playing nonstop, stealing fans from their tour mates the Damned, TSOL, The Queers, The Spits, OMA, The Shocks, The Rezillos, The Swinging Utters, The Real McKenzies and The Adicts. And don't think they are not a headliner either they have done it more times then not, all around the world and back again. Not surprisingly, Europe has been particularly receptive to the Briefs' new wave influenced charms; across the pond they have headlined two European/UK tours.
All the while, this tireless foursome has been spitting out a frantic stream of releases on Dirtnap, Sub Pop, a half a dozen other labels, and now on their new home BYO Records. While avoiding blatant regionalism, The Briefs have maintained a strong connection with the Pacific Northwest underground. Their first record, Hit After Hit was released in Oct. 2000 to phenomenal press. Gearhead magazine quickly described the record as "destined to become a classic" and magazines as diverse as Alternative Press, Dazed and Confused, Village Voice and Kerrang! all noted The Briefs as a band poised to break through to a larger audience. Quickly after the buzz on the record hit the streets, they were scooped up by Interscope and subsequently parted ways after one drunken night...
So, now with their third full length Sex Objects we have another Briefs release that is a "must have" to any true music fan. Their musical approach is economical without ever becoming intentionally minimal. Slash and grab guitars whip the unsuspecting list- ener into a frenzy of motion. The vocals recall the tormented pop genius of Pete Shelley & Elvis Costello, among other more obscure sources. But make no mistake; The Briefs are far from a nostalgia act. This is one potent punk band that can hold their own with the most aggressive of today's upstarts. Their drive and pace are near legendary. Since the year 2000 the band has appeared on no less than nine 7 inches while still finding time to show up on the occasional worthy compilation. The Briefs write songs about Terrorists ("Orange Alert") and twisted longings ("Killed By Ants"), as well as odes to figures both mysterious ("Mystery Pill") and chastised ("Shoplifting At Macys" an ode to Winonah Ryder). The Briefs sweat and bleed all over the quirky, angular tunes they play. Their hold on your stereo will be anything but short.
Through a highly visible ad campaign with Vision Street Wear and their own skateboard design, The Briefs are moving into other mediums while retaining their low-key charm. The band has also produced a number of videos displaying their infectious live energy and unique fashion sense. The ever eloquent Lance Romance sums the band up succinctly. "We're not reinventing the wheel. We're playing music that we grew up listening to that we love," he says. There is no question that The Briefs will continue to make waves with their iconoclastic stance and barbed wire hooks
The Briefs 3rd album will be released in France on Lollipop Records!! The CD includes 3 videos, and the yellow coloured vinyl LP has a bonus track ! Different artwork & packaging.
